オーストラリアのアボット首相は17日、2日前に最大都市シドニーのカフェで起きた人質事件について徹底調査を行うよう要請した。安全保障政策を強化したにもかかわらず容疑者が警戒リストに載っていなかったためだ。

オーストラリアのアボット首相は17日、2日前に最大都市シドニーのカフェで起きた人質事件について徹底調査を行うよう要請した。安全保障政策を強化したにもかかわらず容疑者が警戒リストに載っていなかったためだ。

この事件では銃を持った男が客らを人質に取って立てこもり、警官隊が突入作戦を決行。容疑者の男は射殺されたが、人質2人も死亡した。警察当局は人質の2人について、容疑者が殺害したのか、銃撃戦に巻き込まれて死亡したのかについて調査している。

カフェに立てこもっていたのは、イラン出身の自称イスラム聖職者マン・ハロン・モニス容疑者(50)。イランから政治亡命した同容疑者は、殺人の共犯や複数の性的暴行の疑いで起訴されており、豪当局にはよく知られた存在だった。

しかし、アボット首相はモニス容疑者がいずれの警戒リストにも載っておらず、合法的に取得した銃を使ってカフェでの犯行に及んだことを明らかにした。

容疑者はオーストラリアによるアフガニスタン紛争への介入に反発し、アフガンで犠牲になった豪州兵の遺族に嫌がらせの手紙を送るなどしたことに対して2012年に有罪判決が下されている。

首相は、今後同様の事件を防ぐため、同国のシステムのどこに問題があったのか、中央政府およびニューサウスウェールズ州政府が緊急に調査すると表明した。[シドニー 17日 ロイター]
