紛争が激化した2012年7月以降は月間の平均死者数が5千人に達し、国連は「shockingly high levels」という表現を使って危機的な状況を訴えている。また、「これは『少なくとも』の数字であり、実際の死者数はもっと多いと考えられる」としている。民間団体の調査では12万人以上という報告もある。
