めったに見ることがない、しかし、あまりにも美しい光景だ。この写真はシリアの通りで子供たちが無邪気に遊んでいる姿を撮影したものだ。アメリカとロシアが仲介した停戦が9月12日に実現し、5年以上にわたって内戦が続くシリアに久々の平和が訪れている。

政府軍と反体制勢力の衝突、そしてロシア軍の空爆、たる爆弾の爆撃が激化していく中、約470万人のシリア人が近隣諸国に逃亡し、650万人以上の人々が国内で強制退去を強いられている。そして、840万人の子供たちが今、人道支援を必要としている。

今回の停戦について、アメリカのジョン・ケリー国務長官は「対立を変えるきっかけとなるだろう」と歓迎した。今後は全面的な停戦の実現と支援物資ルートの拡大が当面の課題となる。

スタファン・デミストゥラ国連シリア特使は停戦開始直後、「今回の停戦で死傷者数が最小限にとどまり、暴力が著しく減少した」と述べた。しかしシリア政府は、反体制派に包囲支配されているアレッポへ向けた海外からの支援物資輸送を妨害しており、多くの人々がアレッポに閉じ込められたままになっている。

写真に映し出された喜びと安堵の表情にしばし目を奪われるが、背景に映る荒廃した建物やがれきだらけの通りの光景に、シリアの過酷な内戦の爪痕が垣間見える。
