6歳少年がオバマ大統領に送った手紙「シリアの"救急車の少年"を僕の家に呼んでもらえませんか」

ニューヨークに住む6歳の少年が、シリア北部の都市アレッポの空爆で埃と血にまみれたオムラン・ダクニシュ君の写真を見て心を動かされた。少年はバラク・オバマ大統領に、オムラン君をアメリカに呼んで家族と一緒に暮したいという手紙を書いた。

オバマ大統領は9月20日、自らが主宰する「国連難民・移民サミット」でアレックス君の手紙の一部を読み上げた。その後ホワイトハウスは21日夜に、アレックス君がスカーズデールの自宅で手紙を読んでいる動画を公開した。

「オバマ大統領へ。シリアで救急車に乗せられた男の子を覚えていますか?」と、アレックス君は自宅のダイニングルームで手紙を読んだ。「彼を僕の家に呼んであげることはできませんか?旗と花、風船を用意して待っています」

アレックス君は、姉のキャサリンさんがオムラン君のために蝶を集めると話した。また、彼はオムラン君に自転車の乗り方や足し算・引き算のやり方を教えてあげるとも話した。さらに、友達を紹介するともいう。

現在、世界中に約2000万人の難民がいる。その中の約500万人はシリア難民だ。全体で6500万人の人々が家を追われている。第二次世界大戦のときの人数を超えている。

世界の指導者たちは国連総会で、この危機を打開するために集まり、議論した。オバマ大統領はアレックス君の手紙を読むことで、難民の受け入れを促した。

「これは6歳の少年の言葉です。少年はシニカルになることもなく、あるいは人を疑い、恐れることもありません。国や人種、宗教は関係ないのです」と、オバマ大統領はFacebookに記した。「私たちはアレックス君のようになるべきです。そうなったとき、世界がどう見えるか想像してみてください。苦しみを和らげ、命を救うことができるでしょう」

19日から始まったこのサミットは、国連総会初の難民・移民サミットとなった。国連主催とは別にオバマ大統領が主催したこの会合に参加したのは、世界中の難民に教育と就労の機会を提供するために財政支援を約束した国と組織だ。オバマ大統領は支援金として総額45億ドルを集めた。その中の10億ドルはアメリカ合衆国からのものだ。
