世界三大レースの一つ「インディ500」で佐藤琢磨が日本人として初優勝したことに、アメリカの地方紙の記者がTwitterで不快感を表明し、「人種差別だ」と批判が集まったことで、5月29日までに解雇された。

解雇されたのはスポーツ担当記者、テリー・フレイ氏。佐藤が優勝したのが、5月28日の戦没者追悼記念日(メモリアルデー)だったことを受けて、フレイ氏は「特に個人的な関係はないが、メモリアルデーの週末に日本人選手がインディ500で勝ったことは、とても不快だ」と投稿した。

YARDBARKERによると、この投稿に対して数千件もの怒りの返信があった。1時間以上たってから、フレイ氏は投稿を削除した。

デンバー・ポストは29日、フレイ氏の解雇を発表した。

「私達は当社の記者の一人が書いた無礼で容認できないツイートについて謝罪します。テリー・フレイは、すでにデンバー・ポストの従業員ではなく、個人的な問題についてこれ以上はコメントできません。問題のツイートは当社の信条や立場を代弁するものではありません。私たちの心からの謝罪を受け入れていただけることを望みます」

解雇を受けて、フレイ氏は以下のような謝罪文をツイートしている

「佐藤琢磨に謝罪する。(メモリアルデーの)週末に感情的になり、第2次世界大戦で戦った相手国の一つに対してバカげた発言をしてしまった」
