2016年アメリカ大統領選を巡る共和党の指名争いで、2位につけていたテッド・クルーズ上院議員が5月3日（現地時間）、撤退を表明した。ハフポストUS版が伝えた。
ハフポストUS版によると、この日あったインディアナ州の予備選で、トップを走る実業家ドナルド・トランプ氏が勝利を確実にした。CNNによると、トランプ氏が全国で獲得した7月の全国党大会の代議員は1053人にのぼる。党大会で指名を得るのに必要な過半数（1237人）まであと200人を切った。
共和党全国委員長のランス・プリーバス氏は3日、Twitterで、トランプ氏が共和党の大統領候補だと述べ、「共和党は団結し、ヒラリー・クリントン氏に勝つことに集中しよう」と訴えた。
過激な差別発言や女性蔑視発言を繰り返すトランプ氏には共和党内でも批判が強く、クルーズ氏はトランプ氏の指名を阻止するために「反トランプ票の結集」を呼びかけていた。しかし4月19日のニューヨーク州以降の予備選ではトランプ氏が7連勝するなど、再び勢いを盛り返し、クルーズ氏の戦略も窮地に陥っていた。

インディアナ州では3日、民主党の予備選もあり、ハフポストUS版によれば、バーニー・サンダース上院議員が勝利を確実にした。しかしヒラリー・クリントン前国務長官も代議員を上積みして2208人とし（CNNr集計）、過半数（2383人）まであと200人弱と迫った。
