クック氏は「同性愛者であるのを否定したことはこれまで一度もないが、自分のセクシュアリティを公に話すのは今回がはじめてだ」と語り、「明確にさせてほしい。私は同性愛者であることを誇りに思っている。同性愛者であることは、神から与えられたすばらしい贈り物のひとつだと考えている」とつづった。

手記によれば、クック氏は同性愛者であるおかげで、鋭い社会的視点が得られたという。

同性愛者であるがゆえに、マイノリティであることの意味をより深く理解し、別のマイノリティに属する人々が、日々どのような困難にぶつかっているかを知ることができた。そのおかげで、人の気持ちを思いやれるようになり、人生がより豊かなものになっている。ときにつらく、居心地の悪い思いをすることもあったが、あるがままに自らの道を歩み、逆境や偏見を克服する自信も得られた。サイのように厚くて丈夫な表皮も身についたが、AppleのCEOを務めるうえでは、それはとても役に立つ。

クック氏はこの手記を公開する数日まえに、故郷であるアラバマ州で、LGBT（レズビアン、ゲイ、バイセクシュアル、トランスジェンダー）の権利を擁護する発言をしたばかりだ。

AP通信によれば、クック氏は「LGBTコミュニティの平等に関して、（アラバマ州は）いまだに歩みが遅すぎる」と語り、「現在の法では、アラバマ州の市民はいまだに、性的指向を理由に解雇されるおそれがある」と指摘。性的指向やジェンダー・アイデンティティにもとづく差別から人々を守る法の必要性を訴えた。

「過去を変えることはできないが、過去に学んで、別の未来を生み出すことはできる」と、同氏は述べたという。

クック氏のセクシュアリティをめぐっては、以前から憶測が流れていた。故スティーブ・ジョブズ氏を継ぐ前の2011年には、「Gawker」で、クック氏は同性愛者だと報じられた。

以後、クック氏自身も、自らのセクシュアリティを示唆してきたように見える。「ValleyWag」によれば、昨年同氏は、アラバマ州にあるオーバーン大学で行った人権に関する講演で、若いころに自分が直面した差別について話したという。

「若いころから、さまざまな差別を目にし、実際に体験もしてきました。そうした差別はどれも、多数派とは異なる人々をおそれる気持ちに根ざすものでした」とクック氏は語っていた。

しかし、公にはカミングアウトしていなかったため、まだ疑問の余地は残っていた。5月には、「ニューヨーク・タイムズ」紙が「同性愛者の最高経営責任者たちはどこにいるのか」と題した記事を掲載したが、その後、同記事の定義は「同性愛者であると公表している人」だと説明するに至った。

また、6月には、CNBCのサイモン・ホッブス氏が、「クック氏は同性愛者であることをかなりオープンにしている」と生放送中にうっかり発言し、話題を呼んでいた。
