日本パラリンピック委員会(JPC)の鳥原光憲会長は11月6日、遠藤利明オリンピック・パラリンピック担当相に面会し、2020年東京パラリンピックが開催される8月25日〜9月6日までの期間、全国の小中学校を休日にするよう要請した。若い世代の参加意識を盛り上げるためだという。時事ドットコムなどが報じた。

鳥原氏は「パラリンピックに対する意識を高めるうえでも非常に効果的」とした上で、「大会運営上、交通の混雑も解消できる」と提案。これに対して遠藤氏は「実際に何ができるのか、考えてみたい。文部科学省にも話をつないでみたい」などと回答した。

一連の報道について、Twitterには、「嬉しい、見に行きたい」という賛同の声だけでなく、「共働き家庭はその間どう対策をとるのか」などの困惑や、「東京ディズニーランドなどに行く人が殺到するのではないか」「あまりテレビで放送していないのに」など、効果を疑問視する声も投稿されている。

BBCによると、2012年のパラリンピックロンドン大会期間中の日本のテレビ放送は毎夜、ハイライト部分をまとめた1時間だけだったという。

この大会でイギリスは、オリンピックだけでなくパラリンピックのパブリックビューイングを実施。テレビでも、主チャンネルの「チャンネル4」に加えて衛星チャンネル等も利用して1日16時間以上の生中継を実施した結果、4,000万人近くがパラリンピック中継を視聴した。インターネットも利用した無料ライブ中継や、専用アプリの展開などにより、視聴者を増大させた。
