カリブ海に浮かぶ島国「トリニダード・トバゴ」で、音楽家の日本人女性が殺害された事件で、地元の市長が被害女性側に非があるような発言をして批判を受け、辞任することになった。2月13日付の現地紙トリニダード・ガーディアンが報じた。
殺害されたのは、横浜市に住むスティールパン演奏家の長木谷麻美(ながきや・あさみ)さん（30）。スティールパンはドラム缶で作られた音階のある打楽器で、トロピカルな音色で知られている。トリニダード・トバゴは、この楽器の発祥の地だ。同地のカーニバルは、ブラジルのリオデジャネイロ、イタリアのヴェネツィアとともに世界三大カーニバルの一つに数えられている。
時事ドットコムによると長木谷さんは、カーニバル関連のイベントに参加するため、1月7日に入国。2月10日朝、首都ポートオブスペインの公園で、清掃員によって遺体が発見された。警察は殺人事件として調べている。
ポートオブスペイン市のレイモンド・ティム・キー市長は遺体発見直後の記者会見で、長木谷さんがカーニバルの衣装姿だったことから、次のように述べた。
「私が見てきたカーニバルでの女性の振るまいについて言うと、もちろん男性のサポートの上でだが、女性は暴行を受けないように自分の身を守る責任がある。注意を怠らないようにしながらカーニバルを楽しもう」
これに対し、女性団体を中心に多くの市民が猛反発した。即時辞任を求める4000人以上の署名が集まったほか、大規模なデモに発展していた。キー市長は「私の発言で人々を怒らせ、傷つけたことをおわびする」として、辞意を表明した。
