支持率が低迷するオーストラリアのトニー・アボット首相は、9月14日に行われた与党・自由党の党首選挙に敗れ首相を退任することになり、勝利したマルコム・ターンブル前通信相がオーストラリアの29代首相になることが決まった。
与党自由党の党首交代の是非を問う議員総会は14日開かれ、54-44でターンブル氏がアボット氏を破った。ターンブル氏は党首選に立候補するために9月14日に通信相を辞任していた。同じくアボットの不信任を表明していた副党首のジュリー・ビショップ外相は留任する。
産経ニュースによると、ターンブル氏は2008年9月から自由党の党首を務めていたが、09年12月の党首選でアボット氏に敗北していた。
NHKによると、アボット首相は独断的な政権運営で批判を浴び、支持率が30％と低迷していた。同性婚を認める法案審議でも、自由投票を求める党内の意見に反し、法案に反対するよう党議拘束をかけたことも批判を受けた。
アボット政権の支持率低下を背景に、ターンブル氏とビショップ氏は、アボット氏の交代論を唱えていた。
アボット氏は約2年で首相の座を退くことになる。現役の首相に対して不信任案が提出されるのは、5年間で6度目となる。
ターンブル氏は党首選に立候補を表明した時に、経済の回復と、新しい形の指導力を発揮させると表明した。
「私たち自由党に必要なのはスローガンではなく、有権者の支持だ。私たちは、オーストラリア国民の英知を尊重しなければならない」
ターンブル氏はまた、2016年に控える総選挙での敗北から党を救うために立候補したと述べた。アボット政権が初めての予算を2014年5月に組んで以来、世論調査では自由党と国民党の連立政権は支持を失っている。
「私たちは30の『ニュースポール』（オーストラリアの世論調査機関）で立て続けに敗北している。国民がアボット氏の指導力にノーを突きつけたのは明らかだ。今、アボット氏が首相の座にとどまり続けるなら、これから先どうなるかは火を見るより明らかだ。アボット氏は首相の座を降り、労働党のビル・ショーテン党首にその座を明け渡さなければならなくなる」と、ターンブル氏は述べた。
