銃乱射事件がワシントンで発生、海軍施設の13人死亡 容疑者は元軍人

アメリカの首都ワシントン中心部から約1.6キロ南方にあるワシントン海軍工廠(しょう)で16日午前、銃撃事件が発生し、グレイ市長は16日、現場で射殺された容疑者1人を含む13人が死亡したと明らかにした。警察当局は、逃走中の容疑者もいるとみて一帯を閉鎖し、捜索を続けている。

発砲事件は米東部時間午前8時15分ごろに発生。事件を受け海軍施設の付近の道路、および学校8校が封鎖された。犯人は建物の4階から、1階にあるカフェテリアに向けて発砲したと伝えられている

米連邦捜査局(FBI)によると、現場で警察との銃撃戦を繰り広げた末に死亡したのは、2007~11年まで現役の海軍兵士を務めていたテキサス州フォートワース出身のアーロン・アレクシス容疑者(34)

ロイター通信などによれば、同容疑者は2011年1月まで海軍の予備役兵で、最近、同施設で民間契約職員として働き始めたという

警察の責任者は16日記者会見し、容疑者の可能性のあるほかの男2人が逃走しているとしたが、警察は、その後の捜査で、このうちの1人は容疑者でないことが確認できたとして、残る1人の行方を追うとともに市民に警戒を呼びかけている。

現場はホワイトハウスの南東約4キロの場所で、海軍の艦船体制を構築する海洋システム本部などが置かれている。約3千人が働いており、一般人の立ち入りは厳重に制限されている。周辺には官公庁などがある

オバマ大統領は、経済に関する演説の冒頭で「また銃乱射事件が、今度は別の軍事施設で起きた」と指摘。「(犠牲者らは)海外任務に伴う危険を承知していたが、今日ここ母国で予想もしなかった、想像もできない暴力に巻き込まれた」と述べた
