「岩崎恭子の再来」と呼ばれた次世代のスターは、今回もメダルを逃した。リオデジャネイロ・オリンピック競泳女子200m平泳ぎで8月10日(現地時間)、日本代表の渡部香生子(19)は準決勝で13位となり、決勝進出を前に敗退した。産経ニュースによると試合後、渡部は以下のように語り、号泣したという。

何もできない自分が情けなくて悔しい。去年の優勝を忘れようと取り組んできたが、オリンピックという舞台で何もできなかった。自分が弱かった

■「岩崎恭子の再来」と呼ばれて

よく熱を出し、病弱だった幼稚園の頃、身体を丈夫にしようと、両親が4歳からスイミングスクールに通わせた。最初の転機は中学1年の秋。右肩を痛めて泳げなくなり、肩に負担の少ない平泳ぎの練習を重点的にしたら記録が伸びた。

2011年5月のジャパンオープン。平泳ぎ50m、100m、200mの3種目を制したことで、スーパー中学生として注目されるようになる。翌2012年4月の日本選手権、200m平泳ぎで2位に入り、ロンドン大会の代表に選ばれた。

1992年バルセロナ大会の200m平泳ぎでは、14歳の岩崎恭子がこの種目を制し「今まで生きてきた中でいちばん幸せ」のコメントで注目されていた。メディアは渡部を「岩崎恭子の再来」と呼び、注目を集めた。

平泳ぎ中心の選手からの転機は2013年夏の世界選手権。100m平泳ぎと200m個人メドレーで決勝に進めなかった。観客席から、個人で6種目に出場し、大会の最初から最後まで出ずっぱりだった萩野公介の泳ぎを見ていた。

2015年世界選手権、200m平泳ぎで金メダルを取ってガッツポーズ

2015年8月、ロシア・カザニの世界選手権。200m個人メドレーで銀メダルを取った後、続く200m平泳ぎで金メダルに輝き、リオ代表に内定した。「すごいプレッシャーの中で、想像通りのレースができた」「みんなの期待に応えたい思いがあった」。重圧がかかるレースをものにできるようになった成長が、そこにあった。

2015~16年の年末年始はグアムで「レース後半の持久力強化」を目標に泳ぎ込んだ。迎えたリオの舞台、100m平泳ぎは決勝進出を逃したが、「100mで2本泳げたことは次につながると思う」と前を見据えていた。悲願のメダル獲得は、2020年東京大会以降に持ち越された。
