予選プールB第3戦。負ければ決勝トーナメント進出の望みが絶たれる日本は、相手のミスや反則を生かし、序盤から優位に試合を展開した。

前半7分、五郎丸のペナルティーゴール（PG）で先制。サモアの2人の選手がイエローカードで退場している時間帯に数的優位を生かして押し込み、24分にはゴール前でのスクラムを相手が故意に崩したと主審が認め、認定トライとコンバージョンゴールを得て、10-0とリードした。34分にも五郎丸のPG、前半終了間際には展開プレーから右隅に山田がトライを決め、五郎丸が難しい位置からのCGも決めて20-0となった。
前半終了間際、山田が右隅にトライ。
後半7分、19分にも五郎丸がPGを積み重ね26-0とリードを広げた。後半はサモアが日本の一瞬の隙を突いて素早く走り込むが、最終ラインがしのいで押しとどめた。

16分には山田が負傷交代。24分には、日本ゴール際まで押し込んだボールをサモアが奪って素早く展開、左隅にトライを決めて26-5と反撃するが、これがサモアの唯一の得点となった。

日本は勝ち点4を得て、通算で2勝1敗の勝ち点8となり、この時点でスコットランドに次いで予選プールBの2位に浮上した。初の決勝トーナメント進出がかかる第4戦は12日。アメリカと対戦する。
