ユスラは五輪史上初の難民選手団の一員で、姉のサラと2人で感じた恐怖を語った。地中海を渡ってギリシャに向かう途中で、すし詰めの救命ボートが水上に降ろされた瞬間に、ボートが沈んでしまうのではないかと恐れたという。

もう1人の難民と一緒に、彼女たちは海に飛び込み、3時間にわたってボートを引っ張り続けた。そして、19人の命を救った。

「海の中にいた時は怖かったです。生きるのか、死ぬのか、わかりませんでした」と、国際移住機関 (IOM) が公開した動画取材で18歳の彼女は語る。

彼女は10人の難民選手団の1人として、マラカナン・スタジアムで5日行われたリオオリンピック開会式に臨んだ。

「命をかけて泳いでいた時には、私がここにいるなんて信じられなかったですね」

2人の姉妹は今、ドイツに暮らしている。故郷シリアの首都ダマスカスは内戦で荒廃し、彼女たちは1年前に故郷を離れ、トルコに向かった。

ある夜、他の20人と一緒にトルコの海岸からボートに乗りこんだ。定員のおよそ3倍だった。

「ボートに乗る前、死ぬことになると言われるんです」と、サラは語る。

「ですから、ボートに乗った時にまず考えることは死ぬことです。他のことは考えません」

ユスラ・マルディニは海を渡る危険な旅の途中で多くの命を助けた。

数多くの難民がトルコからヨーロッパを目指して地中海を渡ろうとして命を落としてきた。彼らは中東の紛争や政治的な混乱を逃れて、トルコに来ていた。

同じく水泳選手のサラは、ボートが航海中に転覆した場合には、自分たちの命だけを助けようとしないといけないと妹に伝えた。他の人を助けるのはおそらく不可能だし、みんな覚悟はできていた。

しかし、エンジンが停止しボートが縮み始めた時、彼女たちは他の人が溺れるのを見捨てられないと気づいた。

「ボートにかかっている重量を減らす必要がありましたが、私たち以外に泳げる人はほとんどいませんでした。海中に飛び込んだ時、体全体が競技直前のように震えていました」と、ユスラは言う。

「その瞬間、みんなの命が自分自身のもの以上に思えたのです。ボートに乗っている人たち全員が私の一部のように思えました」

「水に飛び込むのが自分の使命だと思いました。もし、彼らを見捨てていれば、生きている間ずっと後悔していたことでしょう」

彼女は、父親の友人が海の中で彼女のズボンの脚を切り落とし、彼女の衣類が負荷をかけないようにしてくれた。

2時間後、彼女は極限の疲労と戦うようになる。眠ってしまって溺れてしまう危険があった。

「暗く、寒くなっていました。風が吹いて、凍えていました。海水が目に入ってきて、開け続けられなくなったんです」と、ユスラは振り返る。

夜中になってようやく、彼女たちはギリシャのレスボス島にたどり着いた。

「五輪でメダルを獲得したいと思っています。そして、ふるさとの街にまた平和が訪れることを願っています」と、マルディニは言う。

ユスラは、自分の経験が他の人をインスパイアすることになればと言う。

「一生懸命、トレーニングしています」と彼女は述べた。「両親や私たちを支援してくれたみんなに誇りに思ってもらえるように考えています」

10代の彼女には3つの夢がある。

「難民に国境を開いてくれること、オリンピックでメダルを獲得すること、ふるさとにまた平和が訪れることです」
