2001年9月11日午前9時37分、アルカイダのテロリストたちがアメリカン航空77便をハイジャックし、ペンタゴン(国防総省)へ突っ込み、184人が死亡した。

15年以上経った今でも、資料が少しづつ明らかになっている。FBIには、事件直後に撮られた27枚の写真がある。テロ直後に職員が内部で消火作業にあたる様子や、破壊された建物などの写真がある。

FBIが3月23日、この写真を公開した。当初は「未公開写真」と報じられていたが、報道や陰謀論を検証するサイト「メタバンク」は、これらの写真は2011年にすでに公開されており、最近になってFBIのネット上の「保管室」から改めて公開されたものだと指摘した。

184人の死者のうち、125人はペンタゴンの職員だった。ABCニュースによると、この数は予想された数より大幅に少なかった。飛行機が激突したエリアは改装中で、比較的人が少なかったからだ。
