エールフランス航空のCM、「人種差別」で非難

ヨーロッパ最大の航空会社のひとつであるエールフランス航空がこのほど発表した新広告キャンペーンが、「人種差別」スレスレだとしてTwitter上で指摘を受け、非難にさらされている。

ヨーロッパ最大の航空会社のひとつであるエールフランス航空がこのほど発表した新広告キャンペーンが、「人種差別」スレスレだとしてTwitter上で指摘を受け、非難にさらされている。

12カ国で行われている同社の広告キャンペーン「France Is In The Air」(空に浮かぶフランス)では現在、18のビジュアルを公開している。新サービスをアピールしているものもあれば、就航先の国や都市を強調しているものもある。

一部のビジュアルでは、同社の就航先である各国の文化を象徴するような衣装を身につけた女性がポーズをとっており、その大半は白人だ。パリやイタリアなどを表現するビジュアルでは、モデルの女性にさしたる特徴はない。しかし、東京や北京、セネガルの首都ダカールなどの都市の場合は、白人女性が目元に特徴的なメークを施し、ヘアスタイルや髪飾り、アレンジを加えた衣装を身につけている(各国のビジュアルがわかるページはこちら)。

エールフランス航空の英語版プレスリリースによれば、これらの広告ビジュアルは「伝統とモダンさをミックスすることで人をハッとさせる効果を生んでいると同時に、世界に名だたる広告スペシャリストとしてのエールフランスの過去を表現している」のだという。「ムーラン・ルージュフランス革命、太陽王と称されたルイ14世、著名シェフ、オートクチュールといったイメージから、喜び、若さ、そして活力が浮かび上がってくる」

しかし、アジア系アメリカ人の活動家ジェン・ファン氏は、アジア系のビジュアルを批判している。「フェティシズム(存在の全体ではなく、肉体の一部や物などを性的な対象とする性倒錯)」を催す、(不気味や異質さが強調された)「オリエンタリズム」だというのだ。

ファン氏は、北京を表すモデルについてこう語っている。「エールフランス航空を売り込むために、モデルの女性はアジア風の目元を再現すべく黄色のメークを施され、レンズ以外のところをうつろに見据えている。頭には、身の毛もよだつ血まみれの冠さながらとなった、我が中国文化の無残な残骸を、さも誇らしげに載せている」

この広告はまた、Twitter上でパロディを生み出すきっかけともなった。「ウォール・ストリート・ジャーナル」紙のコラムニスト、ジェフ・ヤン氏が、同広告のフォトショップ・テンプレートをTwitter上で公表し、自作したものをハッシュタグ「#FixedIt4UAF」をつけて発表するようユーザーに呼びかけたからだ(以下のツイート)。

なお、航空会社の宣伝が「人種差別」だとして非難を受けたのは今回が初めてではない。2014年1月には全日空(ANA)が、白塗りで白人を装ったパイロットが登場するCMを放映して問題になった(羽田空港発着のANA国際線が増便されることをアピールするCMで、日本人パイロットが、金髪のかつらと、高さを強調したおもちゃの鼻を付けた姿に変わる内容)。西洋人に対する侮辱だとの苦情を受けたのち、同社は謝罪を余儀なくされ、放映を中止している
