サッカーワールドカップのブラジル大会は6月30日（日本時間7月1日）に18日目を迎え、決勝トーナメント1回戦のドイツ対アルジェリアは延長戦の末、ドイツが2対1で勝ち、16大会連続のベスト8進出を決めた。
両チーム無得点のまま延長戦に入ったが、延長戦で先制点を取ったドイツが逃げきった。初の決勝トーナメント進出となったアルジェリアの8強入りはならなかった。
NHKニュースが以下のように報じている。
ドイツは延長前半２分、ミュラー選手のクロスボールに途中出場したシュルレ選手が合わせて先制しました。さらに延長後半１５分には、司令塔のエジル選手が今大会初ゴールとなる追加点を挙げ、２対０とリードを広げました。アルジェリアも延長後半のアディショナルタイムにジャブ選手がゴールを決めて１点を返しましたが及ばず、ドイツが苦しみながらも２対１で勝ち、１６大会連続のベスト８進出を決めました。

また、1998年以来4大会ぶりの優勝を目指すフランスは、2―0でナイジェリアを下し、２大会ぶり7度目の8強入りを決めている。これで決勝トーナメントからアフリカ勢は姿を消すことになった。
