2014年版の「世界寄付指数」（World Giving Index）によると、「他の人のために与える行動を最も多く行った国」のランキングにおいて、アメリカとミャンマーは同率1位となった。
イギリスのチャリティー団体「Charitable Aid Foundation（CAF）」が11月18日（現地時間）に発表したこの指数は、人々が行う寄付の全体像を明らかにするために、過去1カ月以内に「金銭的な寄付を行ったか」・「ボランティア団体の活動に参加したか」・「見ず知らずの他人を援助したか」という3つの項目についてアンケート調査を行い、その平均値に基づいて国ごとのスコアを算出したものだ。米世論調査会社ギャラップ社が135カ国で行った調査データに基づいている。
世界の経済大国であるG20の中で、寄付指数の上位20カ国に入った国は、わずか5カ国だったという（上位20カ国に含まれる先進国は、上位から順に、アメリカ、カナダ、アイルランド、ニュージーランド、オーストラリア、イギリス、オランダ、アイスランド、オーストリア、デンマーク）。
アメリカは、3つの基準すべてについて上位10カ国に入った唯一の国だ。2013年における金銭的な寄付のポイントは、前年に比べて6ポイント上昇している。
世界的に見ると、見ず知らずの他人のために自分の時間を割いたり、ボランティアを行う人は増加しているが、金銭的な寄付を行う人の割合については、わずかな減少がみられる。この低下の原因は、世界の国内総生産（GDP）成長率の低下に関係していると考えられる。
世界寄付指数でアメリカと同率で世界1位になったミャンマーでは、国民の91％が金銭的な寄付を行っている（この率は世界1位。さらに、ボランティア指数も51％で世界1位）。これには、国民の間に深く根ざした伝統的な慈善の精神が影響していると考えられる。ミャンマーにはおよそ50万人の僧侶がおり、上座部仏教では「ダーナ（布施）」という慈悲の心が重要な役割を持っている。
マレーシア、スリランカ、トリニダード・トバゴなど、発展途上国や所得水準の低い国々の一部も、上位20カ国に入っている。
イギリスと同率の7位だったマレーシアは、前年よりも26ポイント上昇している。マレーシアのポイントが急上昇した原因としては、隣国のフィリピンが2013年11月の台風30号（別名「ハイエン」「ヨランダ」）によって被災した際に、献身的な支援活動を行ったことが関係していると考えられる。
CAFのジョン・ロウ会長は、声明で次のように述べている。「この報告から、情勢が不安定な国々では、他の人のために物惜しみせずに助けようとする傾向がより強く現れることがわかる。人間は、最も困難な状況を通じてこそ助け合うようになるものであり、紛争が終結したばかりの国々では、他人を助けるという行動パターンが定着していると考えられる。そして、人間が本質的に持っている『他者を助けたい』という欲求は、欧米で暮らす人々が享受しているような生活水準を満たしていない国々においても現れていることがわかる」
なお、日本は総合指数26％で90位。アジア諸国内では、中国（128位、指数18％）カンボジア（108位、指数23％）に次いでワースト3位となった。日本の場合、金銭的な寄付やボランティア指数は比較的高いが（それぞれ62位と39位）、「見知らぬ人を助ける」指数が134位で、カンボジアに次ぎ、世界ワースト2位となっている。
