12月15日に人質事件が起こったシドニーでは、イスラム系の宗教的な服を身につけたイスラム教徒たちが公共交通機関を利用するときに不安を感じないよう、多くの人が一緒に行動することを申し出る、という動きが起こっている。

「愛は怒りに勝り、希望は恐れに勝る」

この言葉は、2011年に亡くなったカナダの政治家ジャック・レイトン氏のものだ。そしてこの言葉を、オーストラリアの人々が今実行している。

12月15日に人質事件が起こったシドニーでは、イスラム系の宗教的な服を身につけたイスラム教徒たちが公共交通機関を利用するときに不安を感じないよう、多くの人が一緒に行動することを申し出る、という動きが起こっている。

それは、1人の人が、「#illridewithyou」(私も一緒に乗ります)というハッシュタグとともに、次のツイートを投稿したことから始まった。

「もしあなたが、クーギーとマーティンPIの間で373番のバスを定期的に使っていて、宗教的な服装をしていることに不安を感じるなら、私も一緒にバスに乗ります。スケジュールを私宛てに送ってください」

「ハッシュタグがあったほうがいい? #illridewithyouというのはどうかな?」


その声に、すばやく応える人が登場した。

「わたしも参加します。宗教的な服を着ていて、公共交通機関に乗るのが不安な人、一緒に座ります。レッドファーンとKXの間を通勤時間に使っています」

「実用的な、いいアイディアがあります。私を必要な人に見つけてもらえるように、バッグに "illridewithyou" ハッシュタグのステッカーを付けてみました」

「トラム(路面電車)に乗ってるわたしの写真です。あなたに嫌がらせをするような馬鹿なやつがいて心配な時に私をみかけたら声をかけて。一緒に行きましょう」


こうした動きは、イスラム教徒たちを安心させ、そして自分たちがオーストラリア人であることを誇りに思わせた。

「このハッシュタグは、自分がオーストラリア人であることをとても誇りに思わせてくれます。みんな、サポートしてくれてありがとう!」

「明日は車で仕事に行こうと思っていたんですが、サポートの輪が広がっているのを見て考えを変えました。ありがとう。電車で会いましょう!」

「これこそ僕のオーストラリアだ。イスラム教徒として、このハッシュタグは今日最高の出来事。オーストラリアが大好きだ」

「わたしの姉妹たちを守ってくれてありがとう!」


このハッシュタグはバイラルでどんどん広がった。

「#illridewithyouについて、今夜90,000以上のメンションが行われました。すごい!」
