【現地ルポ】リベラル層の「空気」に、トランプ支持者は沈黙を強いられる

「一日であんなに罵倒されたのは生まれて初めてだった(トランプ支持者の26歳の女子学生)」ニューヨーク在住ジャーナリストの石田彩佳氏がレポートする。

大統領選挙から1週間以上が経過したアメリカ全土では、リベラル層による反トランプデモが今も続けられている。一方、ニューヨーク州在住ジャーナリストの石田彩佳氏は、大学や街を覆う空気によって沈黙を強いられるトランプ支持者の姿に、疑問を感じたという。石田氏がレポートする。

選挙の翌日、初めて自由を感じた。

選挙前に(トランプ陣営のキャッチフレーズ)「Make America Great Again」の帽子をかぶって大学に行ったら、たくさんの罵声を浴びせさせられたから。 一日であんなに罵倒されたのは生まれて初めてだった。

この大学では、リベラル層は安全に政治的意見を表明できる環境があるけれど、 私たち保守層にはないのよ。

11月15日夜、コロンビア大学では、学部生による共和党員集会が開かれ、集会では軍隊経験のある女子学生(26)が、トランプ支持を表明する難しさと、抑圧された雰囲気を語った。

この集会はニューヨーク・タイムズがライブ中継し、8000以上のコメントが寄せられた。

コメント欄には「君たちは恥さらしだ」などと共和党員の学生を罵倒する投稿が相次ぎ、彼女の発言を裏付けるかのようだ。

■「セラピー」の授業が支配する「空気」

私の在籍する大学院も例外でない。トランプ氏が選出された結果を受けて、学部長や教授が動揺を隠さず、多くの授業や休み時間が、「セラピー」の時間に当てられてきた。

落胆、失望、不安、憤り、怖れーー。学生ばかりか教員たちもまた、トランプ氏の暴言に傷つけられた自身の価値観や存在を改めて再確認し、同じ価値観の人々との連帯を深めることで、この現実をなんとか乗り越えようとしてきた。

そこで行われる議論はだいたいこのようなものだ。

前提として、その場にいる人は、皆「トランプなんか」を支持するわけがなく、アメリカが大切にしてきた「コア・バリュー」を侵された犠牲者である。

そして「家族や友達を信じられなくなったわ」「自分の全てが否定されたよう」と続く。

実際、イスラム教徒やヒスパニックに対するヘイト・クライムは増加しているとニューヨーク・タイムズは報じている。ハラスメントの被害に遭ったという学生が、怖れを吐露することもある。

しかし、そうして「セラピー」の時間や空間が増えれば増えるほど、選挙で勝利したはずのトランプ支持者や投票者たちは、公の場ではどんどん口を閉ざしていくという現象が起こっている。

誰だって、学校で「差別主義者」などと眉をひそめられたりしたくない。だから、トランプ支持だなんて言い出せない。

選挙から1週間、大学を覆ったこの空気感は、異様だった。「多様性」を求めてきたはずの「リベラル」層の 失望と怒りが、対話を拒み、反対側の意見を圧倒し、封じ込める雰囲気を醸し出しているからだ。

■地下鉄の付箋メッセージ

対話を拒む重苦しい空気が覆ったのは、大学構内だけではなく、マンハッタンの街も同じだ。

トランプを支持しないという人々は、選挙翌日から、ダウンタウンの地下鉄の連絡通路のスペースにメッセージを書いた付箋を貼り付け、その数は数千枚にも上っている。

付箋のメッセージは、そのほとんどがクリントン支持者によって「共に乗り越えよう」とリベラル層の内輪の連帯を呼びかけるものだ。「トランプ支持者との融和」であるとか、「アメリカ全体の結束」を呼びかけるようなメッセージ、ましてやトランプ支持層による書き込みなどは、見たことがない。

リベラル層にとってトランプが大統領に選ばれたという事実は、日本で言うと、ヘイト・スピーチを主導し差別を増幅させてきた団体の代表が、首相や首長に選ばれるようなもの、と捉えられている。だから自分たちもこの選挙結果に深く傷つき、 結果が受け容れられないという感情には、私も共感している。

でも、トランプ支持者の中に含まれるのは、彼の差別的で過激な言動を支持した人だけではない。経済や外交政策などに共感した一般の支持者もいるのだ。

そうした一般の支持者の言い分を無視して、「トランプ派は全く信用できない」と言い放ち、コミュニケーションを取ろうとしないリベラル層の姿勢は、ますます互いの不信感、対立を深めることに加勢してしまっている。

この国の未来のために、歩み寄りができるかどうか。トランプ支持層だけでなくリベラル層側も問われている。
