The float in the background is a stylised rocket artillery launcher, adorned with the words âPyongjin Lineâ on its front. Pyongjin refers to a relatively recent North Korean policy which stresses the dual pursuit of economic and nuclear development. The man on the far left is dressed in construction gear, and is holding the flag of the ruling Workersâ Party of Korea. Kim Jong Un has emphasised construction and raising living standards since coming to power in December, 2011, and the Pyongyang skyline has slowly changed as a result. Beyond the projects touted by state media, however, construction standards can sometimes be poor. In 2014, the government issued a rare apology after a partially-built apartment building collapsed, killing scores of people. The children are wearing the red neckerchiefs typical of the âYoung Pioneersâ within Soviet states, or countries like North Korea which once sat within the former Soviet Unionâs political and cultural sphere of influence.
