過激派組織「イスラム国」（IS）の最高指導者、アブバクル・バグダディ容疑者が、ロシア軍がシリア北部ラッカ近郊で5月下旬に行った空爆により死亡した可能性があると、ロシア国防省が6月16日に発表した。共同通信などが報じた。現在複数のルートで確認中だという。
空爆は5月28日未明、IS幹部らが会合していた拠点に対して実施された。
ロシア国防省の発表によると、会合にはバグダディ容疑者も出席し、ラッカからの脱出経路について話し合っていた。空爆には、爆撃機スホイ34と戦闘機スホイ35が使われたという。

空爆により、約30人のISの幹部などが死亡したという。
BBCによると、アメリカが主導する対IS作戦の有志連合で報道官を務めるジョン・ドリアン大佐は、アメリカはバグダディ容疑者が死亡したかを確認できていない、と語った。バクダディ容疑者が死亡したとの情報は、これまでも複数回浮上している。
バグダディ容疑者は1971年にイラクの首都バクダッドで生まれたとされ、バグダッドの大学で学んだ。NHKニュースによると、2003年に始まったイラク戦争のあとアメリカ軍に拘束され、収容されたイラク南部の施設内でイスラム過激派の思想の影響を受けたとされている。
その後、国際テロ組織・アルカイダ系の組織に所属し、当時の指導者だったザルカウィ氏がアメリカ軍に殺害されたあと過激派組織を率いるようになり、14年6月にはイラクとシリアにまたがる地域でISを一方的に樹立したと宣言した。
