バングラデシュの首都ダッカで起きた武装勢力による人質事件で、菅義偉官房長官は7月2日午後11時30分ごろから記者会見し、日本人7人が死亡したことを明らかにした。
発表によると、バングラデシュ政府が遺体を搬送した病院で、日本人の死亡を確認したという。所持品や写真などから、いずれも国際協力機構（JICA）のプロジェクトに関わっているコンサルタントの男性5人、女性2人としたが、氏名など詳細は「ご家族の了解を得ていない」として公表を拒んだ。
共同通信は政府関係者の話として、死亡した7人のうち4人は「酒井夕子さん、岡村誠さん、下平瑠衣さん、小笠原公洋さん」と伝えた。
菅官房長官は「残虐非業なテロで罪のない人の命が奪われ、強い憤りを覚える。断固として非難します」と述べた。3日にも政府専用機を現地に派遣し、遺族らを向かわせるという。
一方、NHKによると、過激派組織「イスラム国」（IS）のバングラデシュ支部を名乗る組織は3日未明（日本時間）、ネット上に犯行声明を出した。真偽は確認されていない。
