モスルからおよそ35マイル(約56キロ)南に位置するケイヤラ地域にて、燃え盛る油田の前で一人の男性が自撮り写真を撮っている。この写真は10月20日にイラク軍が主要都市をめぐるイスラム国戦闘員に対する軍事作戦中に撮影したもの。

アメリカを含む西側諸国からなる多国籍軍に支援されたイラク軍とクルド人部隊は、IS(イスラム国)からイラク第2の都市モスルを奪還しようとしている最中だ。

ISがモスルを支配するようになって2年がたっている。ロイターによると、この戦闘は2003年にアメリカ軍主導の多国籍軍が独裁者サダム・フセインを倒すために侵攻して以来、最大規模になるとみられる。

数十万人の住民がここ数年でモスルを逃れているが、およそ150万人はいまだにこの町で生活している。

多国籍軍の予想では、この攻撃は数週間を要するとみられるが、イラクのハイデル・アバディ首相は10月20日、「作戦は計画より早く進展している」と述べた。
