BBCの司会者ベン・ブラウン氏が、BBCニュースの生中継に乱入してきた女性を押しとどめようとしたところ、誤って胸を誤って触ってしまった。

ブラウン氏はBBCの政治部デスク、ノーマン・スミス記者にインタビューし、ブラッドフォードで発表された労働党のマニフェストについて意見を聞いていた。しかし通りすがりのサングラスをかけた女性が乱入し、2人の背後で親指を立てて「最高にすばらしい」と言った。

スミス氏はていねいに、「邪魔をしないでほしい」と伝えた。生中継の最中で、午後2時を過ぎたところだった。「あと1分で終わりますから。いいですね?」

しかしブラウン氏は手を出してしまい、女性を押しとどめようとした時、胸に触ってしまった。

女性は後ずさりし、ブラウン氏の肩を叩くする身振りをしたが、実際には手が当たる前に去っていった。

ブラウン氏は騒動の後、以下のようにツイートしている。

不運な中断がブラッドフォードでの放送で起こりました。混乱を最小限に抑えたかったのですが、生中継では非常に難しいことです。絶対にわざとではありません。

一連のやり取りの後でノーマン・スミス記者は、労働党のジェレミー・コービン党首がマニフェストを発表した後、労働党が福祉手当の凍結を解除する公約をめぐって混乱していることに触れた。

「コービン氏は、多くの福祉手当の凍結を解除できるかと訊ねられ、できるだろうと言っています。しかし今回の公約には盛り込まれる内容です。コービン氏が意図していないので、労働党は特に今回問題になっている福祉手当凍結の解除には踏み切らないでしょう。しかし、他の分野での福祉は拡充する公約を盛り込むことになります」

コービン氏はブラッドフォード大学で保守党による福祉手当の凍結を撤回させる方針を表明した。

しかしコービン氏は、1時間も経たないうちにこの方針を撤回した。公約自体はマニフェストに取り上げられたものではなかったが、態度を変えたという批判が噴出している。

保守党は労働党が立場を変えたことについて「ばかげた労働党のマニフェストは1時間もしないうちにばらばらになりつつある」と述べている。
