12月19日夜、ドイツの首都ベルリンで、混雑するクリスマスの市場にトラックが突っ込み、12人が死亡、48人が重軽傷を負った。犠牲者のうち6人はドイツ人だった。

捜査当局は、当初拘束していた23歳のパキスタン人の容疑者を釈放した。この男性は関与を否認していた。実行犯は逃走している可能性が高いとして、引き続き行方を追っている。

過激派組織「イスラム国」(IS)系のニュースサイト「Amaq」は20日、事件はイラクとシリアでの戦闘に関与する国々を狙った「戦士」が起こしたと、関与を認める事実上の犯行声明を出した

メルケル首相は黒い服に身を包んで現場を訪れ、白いバラを手向けた。「ショックだ。動揺し、深い悲しみを覚える」とコメントした。「12人は私たちの仲間であり、クリスマスの休暇で幸せな気分だった。彼らの命をないがしろにした行為は理解できない」

メルケル首相はまた、国民に恐れないよう呼びかけた。「市場に一緒に出かけないクリスマスを迎えたくない。恐れや不安に、生きる自由を奪われたくない」

事故現場には多くの人が献花に訪れた。ベルリン市長のミヒャエル・ミュラー氏は「ベルリンでは見たくなかったものだ」と悲しんだ。

ベルリンのブランデルブルグ門はドイツ国旗のイルミネーションに染まった。

アメリカのオバマ大統領は声明でテロを非難した。

「私たちの生き方を狙い、私たちの社会を脅かす勢力と戦うベルリンの皆さんに、私たちはともにあります」

トランプ次期大統領はさらに強い語調で「ISや他のイスラムのテロリストは、世界的なジハード(聖戦)としてキリスト教徒を例は命で殺戮し続けている」と非難した

フランスのフランソワ・オランド大統領やイギリスのテリーザ・メイ首相ら各国の首脳は、ドイツに哀悼と連帯の意をTwitterで表明した。

FacebookやInstagramなどには #IchBinEinBerliner(私はベルリン市民だ)や #StandWithBerlin (ベルリンと共に立つ)といったハッシュタグで続々と投稿されている。「私はベルリン市民だ」は、1963年にアメリカのケネディ大統領(当時)が、ベルリンの壁建設後に西ドイツ市民への連帯を表明した有名な演説の一節だ。
