キャロライン・ケネディ駐日大使が12月10日、長崎市の原爆資料館を訪問。平和公園にある平和祈念像前では、日米友好の象徴として米国から日本に贈られるハナミズキを植樹した。

キャロライン・ケネディ駐日大使が12月10日、長崎市の原爆資料館を訪問した。ケネディ駐日大使は1978年に初来日した際に広島市の原爆資料館を見学しているが、長崎訪問は初めて。朝日新聞デジタルが報じている。

米国のキャロライン・ケネディ駐日大使が10日、被爆地・長崎を初めて訪問した。長崎原爆資料館(長崎市平野町)を見学し、被爆者から体験談を聞いた後、報道陣に向けて「深く心を動かされた。可能な限り、(長崎の)みなさんの取り組みの支援をさせていただきたい」と語った。

ケネディ駐日大使は資料館視察後に、被爆者の一人でもある土山秀夫元長崎大学長らから、体験談を聞いた。

ケネディ大使は視察後、元長崎大学長の土山秀夫氏(88)ら被爆者3人と懇談。土山氏によると、大使は「核軍縮に向けてさらに努力すべきだと感じた」と述べた。大使は原爆で大きな被害を受けた浦上天主堂も訪れ、その後、平和公園にある平和祈念像前で献花し、日米友好の象徴として米国から日本に贈られるハナミズキを植樹。

ケネディ駐日大使が植樹したハナミズキは、第2次世界対戦前の1912年に、当時の東京市長だった尾崎行雄が日本からアメリカに贈った3000本のサクラの木の返礼として、当時のタフト大統領が日本へ贈ったことで、日米友好の象徴とされてきた。2012年にはサクラの寄贈100周年を記念して、ヒラリー・クリントン国務長官(当時)がハナミズキを日本の各地に贈る「友好の木 - ハナミズキ・イニシアチブ」を発表している。

友好の木イニシアチブは、1912年に日米両国の友好の印として日本から米国にサクラの苗木3000本が寄贈されてから今年で100周年に当たるのを記念するものであり、今後100年の日米の友好関係を見据え、米国から日本国民に3000本のハナミズキが贈られます。寄贈されたハナミズキは日米両国民の変わらぬ友情の象徴として、東京都内や東日本大震災からの復興を目指す東北地方など日本各地に植えられます。
