アメリカ上院本会議は、次期駐日大使に故ジョン・F・ケネディ元大統領の長女、キャロライン・ケネディ氏の起用を可決した。初の女性駐日大使が誕生することになる。11月前半にも日本に着任する予定だという。時事ドットコムが報じた。

米上院は16日の本会議で、次期駐日大使に故ジョン・F・ケネディ元大統領の長女キャロライン・ケネディ氏(55)を起用する人事案を全会一致で可決した。議会の承認手続きはこれで完了し、初の女性駐日米大使誕生が確定した。

アメリカの名門一族「ケネディ家」出身のキャロライン氏。これまでは、ケネディ図書館の館長やハーバード大学ケネディスクールのコンサルタントなど幅広い分野で活躍していた。

キャロライン氏は55歳。アメリカを代表する名門一族「ケネディ家」の出身。ケネディ元大統領とジャクリーン・ケネディ夫人との間にできた子女の中では唯一の存命者で、現在はケネディ記念図書館の館長やハーバード大学ケネディスクールのコンサルタントなどを務めながら、弁護士・作家としても活動している。

弁護士出身のケネディ氏は、政治や外交・通商・安全保障分野の経験はなく駐日大使としての手腕は未知数。今回の就任は過去2回の大統領選挙でオバマ氏当選の功績をあげたことによる「論功行賞」という意味合いが強いという見方もある

着任後は、TPPや安全保障、日米交流などに取り組むことになる
