たとえばアメリカの「ニューヨーク・デイリー・ニューズ」紙のウェブサイトは、この銃撃事件を扱った記事で、「シャルリー・エブド」紙の一面の画像にぼかしを入れるという選択をした。

掲載されたのは、7日の事件で死亡した「シャルリー・エブド」紙の編集長ステファン・"カーボ"・シャルボニエ氏を2011年に撮影したゲッティ イメージズの写真だが、「ニューヨーク・デイリー・ニューズ」紙の記事では、亡くなった編集長が掲げる紙面の漫画にぼかしがかけられている。「デイリー・ニューズ」紙は、いまのところコメントの求めに応じていない。

イギリスの「テレグラフ」紙も同様の対応を選んだ。政治ニュースサイト「ポリティコ」の報道によると、「テレグラフ」紙はライブブログに掲載した「シャルリー・エブド」紙の表紙にぼかしを入れ、最終的には画像そのものをブログから削除したという。

また、「テレグラフ」紙の記事に掲載された、シャルボニエ編集長が「シャルリー・エブド」紙を手にポーズをとっている写真は、漫画が見えないように大幅にトリミングされている

CNNも、イスラム教徒に不快感を与える可能性がある「シャルリー・エブド」紙の風刺漫画を表示しないことを決めた。ポリティコの別の記事によれば、CNNの編集担当シニアディレクター、リチャード・グリフィス氏は、7日午後にスタッフに向けた連絡で、記者たちに「(画像に代えて)そうした風刺漫画を言葉で詳しく説明する」ことを奨励した。

グリフィス氏はこの決定について「これは、『シャルリー・エブド』が襲撃された問題の本質、そして「表現の自由」と「宗教の尊重」の間に存在する葛藤を理解するための鍵となる」と説明している。

AP通信が配信したシャルボニエ氏の写真にも、「シャルリー・エブド」紙の表紙は入っていない。ハフポストUS版の問い合わせに対し、AP通信のスポークスマンは、同社の「挑発を意図した画像は配信しない、という以前からの方針」に沿った対応だと答えている。

そうした動きとは対照的に、風刺漫画の画像をそのままの形で掲載している報道機関もある。たとえばニュースサイトの「デイリー・ビースト」は、「衝撃的なエブドの表紙16選」を集めたギャラリーを作成した。ハフポストUS版も同様の記事を掲載した。

「シャルリー・エブド」紙と同様の刺激的な風刺で知られるドイツの「タイタニック」誌のティム・ウォルフ編集長は、同国の放送機関「ドイチェ・ヴェレ」のインタビューで、同誌はあくまで風刺を続けるつもりであり、それは「ひとつの人権」だと述べている

ウォルフ氏は、7日の銃撃事件について「この襲撃がイスラム教徒によるものであれば、風刺は一層大きな意味を持つことになる。このような事件が起きた後では、さらに多くの風刺が掲載されるべきであり、われわれの雑誌もそうするだろう」と語っている。
