アメリカ・イリノイ州シカゴの住宅地で7月28日、丸腰の黒人少年ポール・オニール(18)容疑者が、警察官に射殺された。8月5日、シカゴ警察署の独立審査機構(IRPA)は、警察官が身につけていたボディカメラが発砲前後に記録していた映像を公開した。

射殺されたポール・オニール容疑者は、28日夜、シカゴ郊外のボーリングブルックで警察官から逃走し、背後から撃たれた。オニール容疑者は車のジャガーを窃盗した容疑をかけられていた。

5日に発表された警察官のボディカメラ映像は、警察車輌から、オニール容疑者が盗んだ車両に数発発砲した様子が写っている。警察官たちは走って容疑者を追跡した。オニール容疑者は、住宅の裏庭にあるフェンスを飛び越えた。そこで容疑者は警察官に背後から複数回撃たれた。ABC7によると、オニール容疑者を殺害した警察官は、作動するボディカメラを装着していなかったという。

警察官がオニール容疑者を蹴った時、「クソガキが、この野郎」と叫んでいる。オニール容疑者は、地面で動かず倒れている。他の警官たちが、彼に背後に両手を回すように叫んでいる。オニール容疑者は、銃を所持していなかった。

盗難車に発砲した警官が、30日間の停職処分になることに文句を言っているのが聞こえてくる。「あーあ、これから30日、しょうもない内勤かよ。クソッタレが」

シカゴ警察署のエディ・ジョンソン署長は、この件について調査すると声明で述べた。

「独立警察審査機構(IRPA)と責任者のシャロン・フェリー氏の尽力で、動画を公開したことできわめて透明性の高い情報公開ができた。調査には、シカゴ警察署が全面的に協力することを約束する」と、ジョンソン署長は述べた。「オニール容疑者の射殺で、これまでの当警察署の方針が今後も継続されるのかどうかが議題となる。IRPAが調査を終えるまでに、私たちは、この事件から得られる教訓を検討する所存だ」

CNNによると、オニール容疑者の家族は、射殺した警察官たちを連邦公民権訴訟で提訴するという。
