アメリカ大統領選の共和党候補ドナルド・トランプ氏と民主党候補ヒラリー・クリントン氏が初めて直接対決したテレビ討論会が9月26日にあったが、トランプ氏は、討論会の司会を務めたNBCニュースのレスター・ホルト氏がクリントンを「ひいきしていた」と非難した。

FOXニュースの「フォックス・アンド・フレンズ」の司会者スティーブ・ドゥーシー氏は27日朝、トランプ氏に電話インタビューした。ドゥーシー氏は、NBCで9月初旬に放送された安全保障の討論番組のマット・ラウアー氏がトランプ氏に対する追及が手ぬるかったとの批判にさらされたことに触れ、司会のホルト氏がその批判をやわらげるために、ホルトが「少し左派寄りになっていた」のではないかと尋ねた。

「もちろんそうです。少しどころじゃない」と、トランプは答えた。「奴は左寄りでしたよ」

トランプ氏は討論会後のスピンルーム(討論後に記者会見をする場所)では、「ホルト氏は素晴らしい仕事をした」「彼の質問はとても公平だった」と肯定的だったが、翌日には正反対のことを言っている。

トランプ氏はホルト氏の司会ぶりに点数をつけるように求められると、トランプはホルトは「CかC+(平均点)だ」と評価した。

「まあまあですね。彼は立派でした」と、トランプ氏は言った。「最後に不公平な質問をしましたけどね。でも私は文句言いません」

トランプ氏が主張する「不公平な質問」とは、トランプ氏のバーセリズム(オバマ大統領はアメリカで生まれではないため大統領として不適格であるとする主張)や、イラク戦争を支持していたことについて質問したことを指しているようだ。

ホルト氏は先回りしてトランプ氏の嘘を非難していた。ホルト氏はトランプ氏がバラク・オバマ大統領の出生地に「見当外れな主張」をしたことに疑問を投げかけ、イラク戦争開戦時にトランプ氏が支持していたことを指摘していた。そしてホルト氏は、トランプ氏の過去の発言との矛盾を繰り返し指摘し続けた。

またトランプ氏は、手ぬるいと批判されたレスター氏についても、ディベートした当初は好感を持ったと話した。

「ディベートの途中までは、レスターはいい司会ぶりでした。普遍的で主要なテーマを取り上げてくれましたから。経済のようなね」
