CBSニューヨークによると、狙撃犯はダッシュカメラの視界の外にある停車中の車を標的にしていたとみられる。しかし、誤ってこの母親の車が銃撃された。子供たちの年齢は9歳と5歳だった。
身元が明らかにされていないこの母親は、地元テレビ局「KSHB」に息子たちの反応をスペイン語で証言した。「息子は『ママ、僕たちみんな死んじゃうよ！ママ、車を動かして！』と言いましたが、前に車がいて動けませんでした」
カンザスシティ警察のスポークスマンは報道陣に対し、YouTubeに公開された事件の映像が犯人逮捕の手がかりとなることを願う、と語った。 地元紙カンザスシティスターによると、けが人はいなかった。
