エボラウィルスに感染したスペイン在住の看護師が飼っていた犬が殺処分されることになった。これを知った動物愛護家たちは、この犬を救うために、ソーシャルメディア上で土壇場の運動を開始した。
「エクスカリバー」という名前のこの雑種犬を飼っていたのは、看護師のテレサ・ロメロ・ラモスさんと、夫のハビエルさん。テレサさんがエボラウィルスに感染したことが確認された後、現在、夫妻は自宅内に隔離されている。
エクスカリバーは、エボラ出血熱を発症している兆候は見られないと報じられているが、地元当局は、ウィルスの感染拡大を予防するために殺処分の実施を望んだ。
「ニューヨーク・ポスト」紙の記事によれば、地元当局は、「エボラ出血熱が伝染するリスクを取り除く唯一の方法は、ウィルスと接触したことのある動物を殺処分する以外にない」と述べた。
隔離状態のロメロ氏は、自宅の部屋から、エクスカリバーを殺処分するのではなく隔離してほしいと訴えた。
「Daily Mail」紙の記事によると、ロメロさんはソーシャルメディア上で次のように述べたという。「私は、マドリード市保健当局の責任者と思われるザルコという人物に対し、この場で公式に非難を表明します。ザルコ氏は、私に飼い犬を犠牲にしなければならないと命じた人物です。ザルコ氏は、私に飼い犬の殺処分に対して同意を求め、私がそれを拒否したところ、彼は自宅に踏み込んで犬を殺すための裁判所命令を取り付けると通告してきたのです」
ロメロさんの呼びかけは、さまざまな動物愛護家たちによって取り上げられ、ハッシュタグ「#salvemosaexcalibur（エクスカリバーを救え）」は世界中で話題となった。ロメロさんの支持者の多くは、このハッシュタグを使用し、各々のペットの写真を使って、支持を表明した（以下はその一例）。
オンライン署名サイト「Change.org」上では、エクスカリバーを救うための署名も行われた。
しかし、「ITV NEWS」は10月8日、署名は30万件集まったものの、エクスカリバーは殺処分されたと報道した。なお、2001年のガボンでの流行時に犬の血液サンプルの分析を行い、犬が感染しても発症しないままウイルス媒介者になっている可能性があると指摘する論文がある。
