エジプトが12月13日、雪に見舞われた。砂漠の国として有名なエジプトに雪が降るのは数十年ぶりだ。子供たちが雪合戦をしたり、雪だるまを作ったりして楽しんでいるようだ。

13日のカイロは終日雨で、気温は10度を下回った。アハラム紙が雪の写真を掲載したのは、カイロ中心部から東に約40キロの砂漠の中にある新興の高級住宅地「マディナティ」。高層住宅の間の道路や公園は真っ白となり、手袋をした子どもたちが野球のボールほどの雪玉を持ったり、車の上に小さな雪だるまが飾られたりしていた。ふだんのカイロからは想像もつかない光景だった。

一方、この厳しい寒波は、ヨルダン、レバノンやトルコのテントに住むシリア難民・数十万人を苦しめている。

シリア国境に近いレバノン東部ベカー平原にある難民キャンプでは、1000人以上が簡素なテントで生活している。地面が泥状になり、入り口からは雪の吹き込むテントでロイターの取材に応じたイブラヒムさん(27)は、「吹雪がわれわれにとどめを刺すだろう。神の元へ避難したい」と述べた。

1週間前に同キャンプに到着したイブラヒムさん一家には、食料を買ったり、より頑丈なテントを立てるお金もないという。新しい難民への支援は不十分だとし、「冬にここに来たが、これならシリアにいた方がましだった。少なくとも自分の家で死ねる」と嘆いた。
