エルカホン警察のジェフ・デイビス署長がこの映像資料を記者会見で公開した。映像はドライブスルーの監視カメラと目撃者の携帯電話で撮影されたものだ。

監視カメラの映像を見ると、オランゴさんに1人の警察官(リチャード・ゴンサルヴェスと確認)が近づいている。これは27日、サンディエゴ近郊エルカホンにあるメキシコ料理店裏の駐車場で撮影されたものだ。もう1人の警察官(ジョシュ・マクダニエルと確認)はパトカーでやって来て、歩いて2人に近づく。少し経ってゴンサルヴェス警官が4発撃ち、オランゴさんの体が地面に倒れる。銃撃の音は携帯の映像でも聞き取れる。1人の人物(ロサンゼルス・タイムズによるとオランゴさんの姉妹)が泣き叫ぶ声が動画の最後に聞こえる。

28日の記者会見で警察は事件をこのように説明した。1人の警官がオランゴさんに銃を向け、もう1人の警官がスタンガンを構えると、オランゴさんは「銃を構えるような」姿勢で何かを警官に向けた。その後1人の警官がスタンガンを発射し、同時にもう1人が銃を数回発砲してオランゴさんを殺害した。

オランゴさんが手にしていたものは電子タバコだった。デイビス署長は30日の記者会見で同様の器具を見せた。

映像が公開されたのは、射殺から毎晩数百人が集まって抗議し、29日には一部が暴徒化したためだ。彼らは殺害を非難し、映像の公開を求めていた。当初警察が公開したのは映像の中の1コマのみだった。

オランゴさんの家族は全映像の開示を求め、デモ隊には平和的になるように促し、29日の記者会見で訴えた。

「私はずっと平和を求めています」と、被害者の母パメラ・ベンジさんは語った。「争いは望んでいません。もし争っているところを見かけても、決して近寄らないでください」

彼女は息子が精神疾患ではなく、「いい人、愛のある人」だったと述べた。

オランゴさんは1990年代初めに難民として家族とアメリカに来た。29日にアメリカ移民税関捜査局は、これまでに2回薬物と銃器による犯罪でオランゴさんの国外追放を試みたと述べた。しかし彼の祖国ウガンダは送還を拒否したという。

エルカホンのビル・ウェルズ市長は28日、この射殺事件にショックを受けていると述べた。「もしこれが自分の息子だったら、私は打ちひしがれていたでしょう」と、ウェルズ市長は語った。

またこの殺害事件の捜査を「透明性のあるものにする」と約束した。
