イギリス中部のマンチェスターで22日午後10時35分（日本時間23日午前6時35分）ごろ、中心部にある屋内競技場「マンチェスター・アリーナ」近くで大きな爆発があり、地元警察によると、22人が死亡、59人がけがを負った。警察はテロ事件の可能性があるとして捜査を始めた。
競技場では当時、アメリカの人気歌手アリアナ・グランデさんのコンサートが開かれていた。アメリカの音楽メディア「ビルボード」によると、グランデさんは無事という。競技場は欧州最大規模で、収容人数は約2万人。マンチェスター・ビクトリア駅に隣接している。
BBCは、爆弾は競技場のロビーにあったと報じている。
現場の状況から、爆発物には内部に多数の金属片が仕込まれ、飛び散るような仕掛けになっていた可能性がある。BBCは、アメリカ当局者による未確認の情報として自爆テロの可能性を伝えた。
欧州ではここ数年、テロ事件が相次いでいる。2017年4月にはストックホルムでトラックがデパートに突っ込み、4人が死亡したほか、同3月にはロンドン中心部にあるウェストミンスター橋の上で乗用車が通行人をはねるなどして5人が死亡した。2016年にもブリュッセルやニースでそれぞれ数十人が亡くなるテロ事件が起きている。
アリアナ・グランデさんは23日、事件後初めて自身の公式Twitterを更新し、「ショック。心からお悔やみ申し上げます。言葉が出ません」とコメントした。
ソーシャルメディアなどでは、会場の中で撮影されたと見られる悲鳴をあげながら逃げようとする観客の姿がアップされている。
