イスラム教過激派組織「イスラム国」のシリア領内の拠点への空爆で、アメリカ空軍の最新鋭ステルス戦闘機「F-22ラプター」が初めて実戦投入されたことが明らかになった。アメリカのABCニュースが報じた。

世界で最も高価な戦闘機の一つである「F-22 ラプター」は、シリア領の空爆という初の戦闘任務を月曜日に成功させた。

アメリカ軍は9月23日、サウジアラビアなど中東5カ国と合同で、「イスラム国」を対象とした空爆を22回実施した。シリア人権監視団によると、「イスラム国」の戦闘員70人以上が死亡したという。

レーダー回避機能を備えたF-22の開発・生産には、670億ドル(約7.2兆円)もの予算が投じられたことで「世界で最も高価な戦闘機」とも呼ばれる。当初は750機の配備を予定していたが、冷戦の終結で計画を縮小。2003年以降、わずか188機のみが配備されたのみだった。高いステルス性能の一方で運用コストが高く、イラク・アフガニスタン・リビアでアメリカ軍が空爆を行った際には使用されなかった。

ウォール・ストリート・ジャナール日本版では、空軍の当局者が「F-22には、旧来型戦闘機ではできないような方法で敵に近づける優れた能力がある」と述べたと報じている
