1938年にフォーチュン誌が実施した世論調査結果によれば、67.4%のアメリカ人が、ドイツやオーストリアといった国からの政治難民受け入れに反対していた。難民のほとんどはユダヤ人だった。

2015年、アメリカは同じような難民問題に頭を悩ませている。11月13日にパリで起こった同時多発テロの後、過激派組織「イスラム国」(IS)のテロリストが、難民にまぎれてイラクやシリアからアメリカに入国するのではないかという不安が広がっているからだ。

CNNによれば、アメリカ人成人の53%がシリア難民のアメリカへの入国を望んでいない。難民1万人を受け入れるというオバマ大統領の計画を支持するのはわずか28%だ。

賛否両論あるだろうが、難民受け入れを巡る議論が熱を帯びる今、アメリカだけでなく世界を素晴らしい場所に変えた難民たちがいることを思い出したい。何人かをご紹介しよう。
