フランスの検察当局は1月25日、大統領選の有力候補とされる中道・右派の統一候補フランソワ・フィヨン元首相が妻ペネロプ夫人に勤務実態がないのに多額の給与を支払っていた疑惑について、公金横領の疑いで捜査に着手した。
ガーディアンによると、この疑惑は、25日付の週刊紙「カナール・アンシェネ」が報じたもの。フィヨン氏は下院議員時代、勤務実態のないペネロプ夫人にスタッフとして8年間に約50万ユーロ（約6100万円）支払ったという。
フランスでは家族を議員秘書に雇って議員報酬から給与を支払うことは違法ではない。フィヨン氏の広報担当は「ペネロプ夫人は仕事を手伝っていた」と、勤務実態があったことを強調した。また、フィヨン氏はボルドーの選挙集会で「人を貶める季節が始まったようだ」と報道を批判した。
「コメントするようなことは何もない。この記事からは蔑視と女性嫌悪が垣間見え、怒りを覚える」
フィヨン氏はフランス西部ルマン出身の62歳。地元国民議会議員のスタッフを経て政界に進出した。
シラク政権では社会問題相、教育相を歴任。サルコジ政権では2007年から首相を5年間務めた。政治的立場もサルコジ氏同様、右寄りのやや強硬な立場だ。法人税の引き下げや企業への支援を通じて経済の再生を目指す一方、同性カップルの権利を制限するなど、保守的な公約を掲げている。
