訴えたのは元従業員のヤコブ・マクファーソン氏。グーグルの従業員を代表する集団訴訟の形で審理を進めるよう求めている。
マクファーソン氏は２０１３年に同社のコンテンツ配信サイト「グーグルプレイ」で雑誌のサイト・マーチャンダイザーとして時給３５ドルで働き始めた。
訴状によると、マクファーソン氏はフリーランスという位置付けで、外部の代理店を通じて給与が支払われていた。同氏は勤務時間を週３０時間に制限されていたが、実際はそれを超えて働いていた。しかし、グーグル側は時間外労働や週４０時間を超えたいかなる残業に関しても給与の支払いを拒否。マクファーソン氏は残業代の支払いを求めたが、グーグル側は最終的に同氏との契約を打ち切ったという。
グーグルの代理人はコメントを控えている。
