財政危機が続くギリシャの債務問題で、ギリシャの財務次官は4月6日、ドイツ政府に対してナチス・ドイツによる占領で受けた損害に対する賠償を求めた。その額は2790億ユーロ（約36兆4300億円）に上るという。朝日新聞デジタルなどが報じた。
1月27日のギリシャ総選挙で、2009年の金融危機以降続くギリシャの緊縮財政に反対する最大野党の急進左派連合（Syriza）が政権を獲得し、アレクシス・ツィプラス党首が首相に就任した。
ギリシャのアレクシス・ツィプラス首相
ツィプラス首相率いるギリシャ政府は、EUが提示していた第2次金融支援プログラムを拒否した。年金や雇用を削減する厳しいプログラムには応じられないという理由だ。
ギリシャ最大の債権国ドイツは債務の削減を求める姿勢を崩さず、メルケル首相はギリシャが第2次金融支援プログラムの期限延長に要請しなければ交渉に応じない姿勢を見せた。ギリシャはやむなく2月末の終了期限の直前で６月末まで４カ月間のプログラム延長を要請した。
しかしツィプラス政権誕生の原動力となった反緊縮派の突き上げを受けたギリシャ政府は、財政改革案を提示する代わりに、ドイツに対し「ナチス・ドイツによる占領の損害」に対する賠償を求める手段に訴えた。ツィプラス首相も、2月8日の国会演説で賠償請求を主張した。
産経ニュースによると、ドイツ政府は「賠償問題は解決済み」との姿勢を崩していないが、金融支援と引き換えに厳しい財政緊縮策を求めるドイツに揺さぶりをかけ、今後の交渉を優位に運ぶ思惑があるとみられる。
一方で、ギリシャのバルファキス財務相は、9日に期限を迎える国際通貨基金（IMF）への4億5000万ユーロ返済を履行することを表明している。
時事ドットコムによると、ギリシャでドイツのショイブレ財務相にナチス・ドイツの軍服を着せた風刺画が新聞に掲載されるなど、両国の関係は急速に悪化している。
