ギリシャで財政緊縮策の受け入れを争点に行われた国民投票は、緊縮策への反対が賛成を大きく上回った。ハフポストギリシャ版の速報によると、7月6日午前1時47分（日本時間午前7時47分）の中間集計（開票率約96.66％）で、反対が61.33％、賛成が38.67％で、反対が大きくリードした。
緊縮策は、欧州連合（EU）などから金融支援の条件として要求されていた。しかし、今回の国民投票で拒否する意思が明確になったことで、巨額の借金を支払うことができずにギリシャ経済が破綻し、共通通貨ユーロから脱退を迫られる事態も現実味を帯びてきた。
NHKニュースによると、緊縮策への反対を訴えてきたチプラス首相はテレビ演説の中で、「民主主義が勝利した」として勝利宣言。「ギリシャ国民は、ヨーロッパと、持続可能な支援策を交渉する力を与えてくれた」と述べて、今回の国民投票で示された民意を後ろだてにEU側と金融支援を巡る協議に臨む考えを示した。
ユーロ圏の各国は、7日に緊急の首脳会議を開きギリシャへの対応を話し合う予定だが、ギリシャとの協議の難航は避けられない見通しだ。
