大型ハリケーン「マシュー」が10月初頭からカリブ海諸国を直撃し、ハイチでは少なくとも136人が死亡した。当局も被害の全容を把握しておらず、被害はさらに拡大するおそれがある。ガーディアンなどが報じた。

CNNによると、ハリケーンは4日、ハイチに上陸し、とりわけ建物が脆弱な最貧困層の地域に壊滅的な被害を与えている。

「最も懸念されているのは、全体像を把握していないことだ。被害がどれほど深刻なのかを理解するために必要な情報が入手できてない」と、支援団体「メルシー・コープス」のクリスティ・デラフィールド氏は述べた。「橋が流され、地滑りが発生し、携帯電話の通信が利用できなくなっている。(特に被害が大きい)ハイチ南部に行く必要がある」

マイアミ・ヘラルドによると、ハイチ南西部ジェレミーに住むアンドレ・モイーズさんは「私たちはすべてを失った。家畜も、収穫物も、書類も、すべてだ」と語った。

国連児童基金(ユニセフ)では、ハイチの子供400万人が被災する可能性があり、感染症の拡大が懸念されると警告している

ハイチでは9日に予定されていた大統領選挙が延期された。

ハリケーン「マシュー」は、5段階に区分されるハリケーンの強さのうち、「カテゴリー4」で、アメリカ南部から東海岸に接近しており、フロリダ、サウスカロライナ、ノースカロライナ、ジョージアで非常事態宣言が出ている。
