ハワイの北向きの海岸では1月21日、この冬最大の大波がやって来た。40フィート（約12メートル）もの波が、ジョーズやパイプライン、そして聖地ワイメア・ベイのような有名なサーフスポットに訪れた。
ワイメア湾で開かれる予定だったサーフィン競技会「クイックシルバー・イン・メモリー・オブ・エディ・アイカウ」は、波が不規則なため延期に。しかし、ケリー・スレーターら世界最高のサーファーらが技を見せた。
この日、各地で多くの人々が、命知らずのサーファーを撮影した。ここではそのいくつかを紹介する。
