局地的に短時間で激しい雨が降る「ゲリラ豪雨」に備えてもらおうと、気象庁は7月25日、より精度の高い降雨予測の情報提供を8月7日から開始すると発表した。
新たに公開される「高解像度降水ナウキャスト」では、降水域の分布を250m四方の細かさで5分おきに30分先まで予測できる。気象庁は2004年から、レーダーで積乱雲の移動を予測する「降水ナウキャスト」をホームページ上で公開しているが、1km四方までしか解析できず、局地的な大雨を予測するのは困難だった。
気象庁は、高性能レーダーや気象庁や地方自治体などが保有する全国約10000カ所の雨量計の観測データなどを活用し、解析の精度を高めたという。
今回の高解像度化に当たっては、気象ドップラーレーダーのデータに加え、気象庁・国土交通省・地方自治体が保有する全国約10,000カ所の雨量計の観測データ、ウィンドプロファイラやラジオゾンデの高層観測データ、国土交通省XRAINのデータも活用し、降水域の内部を立体的に解析することにより、精度向上を図っています。

パソコンだけでなく、スマートフォン専用ページも開設される予定だ。気象庁は「外出時にスマホでチェックしてもらい、安全確保に役立ててほしい」としている。
