松山英樹（23）が2月7日、男子ゴルフのフェニックス・オープンで優勝し、アメリカ・ツアー2年ぶり2勝目を挙げた。アリゾナ州で行われていたフェニックス・オープンはこの日、最終ラウンドを迎え、松山が通算14アンダーで並んだリッキー・ファウラー（アメリカ）をプレーオフで破った。時事ドットコムは次のように伝えた。
３打差２位でスタートした松山は４バーディー、ボギーなしの６７で回り、ファウラーとのプレーオフに持ち込み、４ホール目の１７番（パー４）でファウラーがティーショットを池に打ち込んでボギーとし、松山はパーで２年ぶりの勝利を決めた。
日本男子の米ツアー複数回優勝は、３勝を挙げた丸山茂樹に続いて２人目。
