日本旅館がロンドンやニューヨークなど海外進出【争点:アベノミクス】

日本旅館をニューヨークやサンフランシスコ、ロンドンで展開する。日本でリゾート施設運営をしている星野リゾートの星野佳路社長がインタビューで答えた。どのような考えがあるのだろうか。

リゾート施設運営の星野リゾート(東京都中央区)の星野佳路社長は、英米の主要都市でホテル・旅館運営を展開する方針を示した。ロイターとのインタビューで明らかにした。米国ではニューヨークやサンフランシスコ、また英国はロンドンでの展開を想定している。

英米への進出時期については明言しなかった。軽井沢、京都、竹富島で「星のや」ブランドの旅館を展開する同社は、海外の第1号拠点として2014年にインドネシアのバリ島に進出予定だが、その他、国外への進出例はまだない。

星野社長は、日本旅館には日本人ならではのサービスや「おもてなし」があるという。たとえば、単なる部屋の清掃だけでなく、季節にあった生け花で宿泊客を部屋に迎えるのはその一例。また、その土地の文化や魅力を宿泊客に説明するなど、スタッフのこだわりを宿泊客に伝えるという海外のホテルにはないサービスもあり、それが海外でのビジネスチャンスになると指摘した。

星野社長は「世界の大都市に日本車が走っている。それと同じように日本のおもてなしを提供するホテルが(世界の大都市に)あってもいい」と述べた。

星野リゾートは、2016年に東京都千代田区(大手町)に高級日本旅館「星のや東京」を開業する計画。星野社長は、「これだけ世界の(ホテル)運営会社のブランドが出そろっている東京で、『星のや』という日本旅館のブランドが海外のホテルより高いパフォーマンス、収益性を示せるかが問われている」と述べ、都心での成功が将来の海外事業の拡大の試金石になるとの考えを示した。

これまで地方の旅館の再生に注力してきた同社にとって、 都心オフィス街での初の高級旅館運営は、これまでのノウハウの集大成になるとも位置づけている。

「星のや東京」は三菱地所

一方、星野社長は、今後の懸念材料として、2020年のオリンピック・パラリンピックの東京開催後に、日本の観光業の成長が維持されるかを挙げる。五輪開催後の観光業の成長には、「目先の海外旅行者を増やすことを考えるのではなく、まず巨大な国内の観光需要をどのように収益に結び付けていくかが大切」と述べた。

星野社長は、日本人の国内旅行者数が増えれば、それによってサービスや質が向上し、宿泊施設の収益性の改善が期待できると指摘。その時点で国内外からの日本の観光業への投資拡大も期待でき、自然と海外からの旅行者が増える好循環が生まれるとの考えを示した。

国内の観光需要を喚起する方策として、星野社長はゴールデン・ウィークやシルバー・ウィークといった大型連休の地域別の分散取得をあげる。地域によって大型連休の時期をずらすことで、混雑が軽減され、旅行代金の低下や全国的な観光活性化につながるとみている。
