アメリカ大リーグ、マイアミ・マーリンズのイチロー外野手(42)は6月15日、サンディエゴで行われたパドレス戦の九回の第5打席に右翼線二塁打を放って日米通算の安打数を4257本(日本1278本、アメリカ2979本)とし、参考記録ながら、メジャー最多4256本のピート・ローズの数字を超えた。朝日新聞デジタルなどが報じた。

この試合まで、ローズの記録まで残り1本としていたイチローは1番右翼手で先発出場し、一回に捕手内野安打を放ち、九回の二塁打で「新記録」を達成した。今季の残り試合で、日本選手初、大リーグで過去29人しか達成していないメジャー通算3千安打を目指す。

現地からの報道によると、イチローは試合後の記者会見で「子供のころから笑われてきたきたことを達成してきました。小学生の時、プロ野球選手になると言って毎日野球を練習して、いつも笑われて悔しい思いもしましたけど、でもプロ野球選手になりました。何年かやって、日本で首位打者を取って、アメリカに行く時にも首位打者になってみたいと言って、その時もやっぱり笑われました。でも、それを2回達成しました。常に、人に笑われてきた悔しい歴史が僕の中にあるので、これからもそれをクリアーしていきたいという思いがもちろんあります」と語った。

イチローは愛知・愛工大名電高から、1991年秋のドラフト4位でプロ野球オリックスに入団。卓越した技術で7年連続首位打者、5度の最多安打に輝いた。2000年オフにポスティング制度で大リーグのマリナーズに移籍した。

マーリンズは3-6で敗れた
