トランプの移民政策に対抗してアメリカ各地で起きた抗議活動「移民のいない日(Day without immigrants)」に参加した人たちが、職を追われる事態が相次いでいる。デモの参加者100人以上が「クビ」にされたと、NBCニュースなどが報じた

CNNによると、「移民のいない日」は、アメリカ経済にとって移民がいかに重要な役割を果たしているかを示すために企画。2月16日、ニューヨークやロサンゼルスなど全米各地で展開した。

調理師、ウェイター、清掃係、大工、デリバリー担当者といったさまざまな職業に就く外国出身者やその支援者らが、仕事を休んでデモに参加。「イエス・ウィー・キャン」と描かれたプラカードを掲げ、街を練り歩いた。その他にも、仕事や学校に行かずに家で待機し、抗議の意思を示す人もいた。

デモの影響で、全米各地で数多くの飲食店や施設が休業。移民の従業員への支持を示して休業にした店もあれば、従業員が足りずに営業ができなかった店もあるなど、混乱が生じた。

NBC4によると、テネシー州では、デモに参加した約18人が、勤務先の塗装会社からデモの翌日に「クビ」を言い渡された。そのうちの1人は、「上司から『もう仕事に戻ってくることはできない』と告げられた。デモはたった1日だけで、代わりに日曜日に出勤するつもりでしたが、理解してもらえなかった」とNews Channel 5の取材に答えている

一方会社側は、「時間厳守である仕事の性質上、職場に来なければ辞めてもらうと伝えていたので、こうするしかない。仕事を休んだ理由であるデモへの参加は、解雇の決定とは関係ない」との声明を出した。

NBC2によると、フロリダの児童施設では、多くの職員がデモに参加したため、休校を余儀なくされた。2人の職員がデモ参加を希望したところ解雇を言い渡されたと話す一方、施設側は「誰も解雇していない」と主張しているという。

このほかにも、サウスカロライナのボート製造会社は、デモに参加した社員21人に手紙で解雇を通告

オクラホマのレストランでは12人のキッチン担当者が辞めさせられ、既に新たな募集が出されている。デンバーでは、石工会社に務める少なくとも30人が「クビ」になった
