地元警察のアナンド・ミシュラ氏は電話取材に対し、「現地からの最新情報では、109人が死亡、133人が負傷している」と答えた。「私たちは川の中の遺体を収容している。犠牲者は群衆の中で窒息したようだ」と付け加えた。

将棋倒し事故は10月13日に発生、インダス川の支流シンド川にかかる橋の上にはおよそ2万人の人がいたと警察は述べている。地元当局によると、トラクターが橋に衝突して崩壊したのではないかという噂が起きて将棋倒しが起こったという。巡礼者の多くが窒息死したり、川に飛び込んで溺死したりした。

事故が起きた日は、女神ドルガに祈りを捧げるヒンズー教徒の祭り「ナバラトリ」が行われており、例年数百万人の信者が寺院を訪れる。州都ボパールからおよそ350キロ離れたラタンガル寺院には早朝から40万人以上が詰めかけていた。

現場では同じような事故が2006年にも起きており、50人が死亡した。地元当局はこの事故を受けて新しく橋を作ったが、「ダティア警察は2006年の事故から何も学んでいない」と、10月14日付けの「ヒンドゥスタンタイムス」が強い調子で非難したとハフィントンポストフランス版は伝えている。
